The Gwangju City Council announced on May 21 that it will hold a forum on the theme of "Discovering and Revitalizing Gwangju's Night Tourism Resources" at 2:00 p.m. on May 24 in the council's Budget Committee meeting room.
The forum, which marks the 60th Citizens' Day, will provide an opportunity for Gwangju citizens to discuss local issues and share information. Around 70 citizens and experts are expected to attend.
The conference will begin with presentations by Lee Mooyong, professor at Chonnam National University Graduate School of Culture, and Shin Jaeyoon, team leader at the Korea Tourism Development Institute, followed by a panel discussion featuring six experts. The panelists are Ahn Pyunghwan, chair of the council's Administrative and Autonomy Committee; Kim Jingang, president of Gwangju Tourism Organization; Park Jongchan, professor at Gwangju University; Lim Sohee, researcher at Korea Tourism Organization; Lee Yongkyu, CEO of Travelable; and Kim Daesung, head of the Festival City Team at Gwangju City.
Professor Lee Mooyong will present on the topic "Brightening Gwangju, the City of Light, through Culture," addressing cultural strategies for night tourism. He will propose seven major night tourism projects, including: creating a night culture map; fostering relationship-based populations in third places; establishing cultural nights that embrace the concept of time zones; developing night walking trails in Gwangju that people want to explore; and introducing the concept of a Night Mayor.
Team leader Shin Jaeyoon, in his presentation titled "Night Tourism: The Secret of an Attractive Concept," will emphasize the necessity of night tourism in Gwangju and propose night tourism resources and revitalization strategies for each of Gwangju's five districts, based on case studies from Tongyeong and Seongju.
During the comprehensive discussion, participants are expected to address the current status and future direction of Gwangju's night tourism, ways to boost night tourism through storytelling, and the impact of the tourism industry on the local economy, exploring various approaches to regional night tourism.
Chairperson Shin Sujeong stated, "In celebration of Citizens' Day, I expect this to be a meaningful opportunity to gather public opinion with citizens on the topic of regional night tourism," and added, "Since this year is the 'Year of Visiting Gwangju,' and various efforts are needed to welcome domestic and international visitors, we will strive to implement the valuable insights presented at this conference."
