Bucheon City in Gyeonggi Province has installed a display sculpture near the Jungdong Interchange (IC) in Bucheon that broadcasts comic images, aiming to strengthen the "Comic City Bucheon" brand and effectively promote the city's identity.
The sculpture consists of an electronic display board inscribed with "Comic City Bucheon" and four structures shaped like smartphones. Each structure is equipped with a digital display that shows comic images, and the design allows webtoon characters to naturally appear on the large smartphone screens.
The content currently being displayed features character images from the webtoon "Solo Leveling." Last year, the city signed a joint agreement with the Korea Manhwa Contents Agency and Redice Studio to utilize major webtoon intellectual properties (IP) such as "Solo Leveling" and "Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint."
In addition, the city plans to collaborate with content companies based in the Webtoon Convergence Center to promote a variety of webtoons and enhance the competitiveness of the local cultural industry by producing high-quality cultural content.
The sculpture can be freely viewed near the Jungdong Interchange, and a range of webtoon content will be broadcast sequentially in the future.
Meanwhile, "Comic City Bucheon" is a city brand built around comic-related cultural infrastructure such as the Bucheon International Comics Festival and the Korea Manhwa Museum. The city designed the sculpture to reflect both the industry's potential for expansion?such as the global reach of webtoons and animation production?and the modern trend of consuming content anytime and anywhere via smartphones.
The city expects that the installation of this sculpture, in connection with the construction of the Webtoon Convergence Center, will further solidify the identity of the "Comic City Bucheon" brand.
A Bucheon City official stated, "This sculpture is not merely a landscape facility, but a cultural symbol that visually embodies the city's identity," adding, "We will promote various support projects to ensure that Bucheon can continue to grow as a sustainable cultural city by revitalizing the webtoon-centered content industry."
