Gwangju Seogu Leads as a "Cultural City" with Apartment Concerts

Operating Performance Programs Utilizing Everyday Living Spaces as Stages

Gwangju Seogu District (Mayor Kim Ikang) is transforming into a "city of everyday cultural enjoyment" by creating an environment where everyone can experience culture in their daily lives.

On May 21, Seogu District announced that it is focusing on spreading everyday culture by utilizing urban living spaces such as parks and apartment complexes as stages for various performance programs.

In particular, the busking performance series "Urban Rak" held in places frequently visited by residents has received a strong positive response. "Urban Rak" is held at major community spaces such as Pungam Lake Park, Sangmu Citizens Park, and Yeomju Children's Park. The program is designed and operated to provide performance opportunities for local artists and to allow residents to enjoy live performances in their daily routines.

The performances are scheduled as follows: every Saturday at 5:00 p.m. at Pungam Lake Park and Sangmu Citizens Park; every second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at Yeomju Children's Park. In addition, on the first, third, and fifth Wednesdays of each month, resident-participation busking teams take the stage to interact directly with the audience.

This year, the district is also increasing accessibility for residents by holding "Visiting Apartment Mini Concerts" at apartment complexes that are far from cultural facilities. In the second half of the year, four more apartment complexes will host additional performances.

Meanwhile, on May 8 at Ssangchon Community Welfare Center and on May 12 at Nongseong-dong Bityeoulchae Apartment, concerts featuring popular music for seniors, pansori, classical music, and folk songs were held, receiving enthusiastic responses.

Lee Hyunsun, head of the Culture and Arts Division, stated, "Culture should not exist only in grand spaces, but should be easily accessible in the parks we walk in and the apartments where we live. We will continue to expand performances that bring culture closer to residents in their everyday lives to further establish a city of everyday culture."
