Jeonnam Province has urged farmers to enroll in rice crop disaster insurance, which covers natural disasters such as typhoons and heavy rains, as well as damage caused by pests and diseases, by the 20th of next month.

The rice crop disaster insurance program provides compensation to farmers in the event of damages caused by natural disasters such as typhoons and heavy rains, helping to stabilize farm management. In addition, by signing up for the special pest and disease coverage, farmers can also be compensated for damages caused by seven types of pests and diseases, including brown planthopper, rice blast, bacterial leaf blight, brown planthopper, rice blast, stripe disease, rice kernel smut, black bug, and bacterial grain rot.

To ease the financial burden on rice farmers, Jeonnam Province covers 90% of the insurance premium. As of last year, the average insurance premium was about 540,000 won per hectare, and farmers only need to pay 10%, which amounts to 54,000 won. For organically certified eco-friendly fields, 100% of the insurance premium is subsidized.

Farmers wishing to enroll in the rice crop disaster insurance should apply at their nearest local agricultural cooperative within the application period.

Jeonnam Province has also requested that farmers maintain drainage systems in advance and apply an appropriate amount of nitrogen fertilizer to prevent rice lodging and flooding caused by the typhoons and heavy rains that occur every year.

Yoo Deokgyu, head of the Food and Horticulture Division of Jeonnam Province, stated, "To prepare for disasters, crop disaster insurance is essential for ensuring agricultural income and safe farming. I strongly encourage all rice farmers to enroll in disaster insurance within the application period."

Last year in Jeonnam, 36,000 farming households that suffered rice crop damage due to typhoons and brown planthopper received a total of 110.7 billion won in insurance payouts.
