Harvard Medical School Scholar Shares the "Secrets of Mitochondria" at Pusan National University

A scientist ranked in the top 1% worldwide visited Pusan National University to share the latest research findings on mitochondria, a key organelle in life sciences.

Pusan National University (President Choi Jaewon) invited world-renowned scholar Marcia Haigis of Harvard Medical School to deliver a special lecture at the university headquarters on May 20.

Professor Haigis gave a special lecture titled "The Role of Mitochondria in Health and Disease," focusing on how changes in mitochondrial metabolism and function affect various pathological phenomena such as cancer, aging, and metabolic diseases.

She is a pioneer in mitochondrial research, has published numerous papers in international journals such as Cell, Nature, and Science, and is recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher (HCR) in the top 1% worldwide by Clarivate.

This lecture was part of an academic event inviting international scholars in the fields of Science, Arts, and Mathematics (SAM), organized by the Pusan National University Office of Research and co-hosted by the Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Molecular Biology in the College of Natural Sciences. It provided domestic researchers and graduate students with an opportunity to learn about global trends in life sciences.

A representative from Pusan National University stated, "Professor Haigis's lecture offered an in-depth and comprehensive perspective on how functional changes in mitochondria impact diseases," adding, "It was of practical help in laying the foundation for international collaborative research and expanding research networks."

The event also took the form of a "Symposium for Mitochondrial Research Collaboration," featuring lectures by Pusan National University faculty and a panel discussion for early-career researchers, creating a vibrant forum for academic exchange.
