Gyeonggi Province has installed character-themed sculptures of "flagship species" at nine ecological education and natural environment conservation facilities within the province.
On May 21, Gyeonggi Province announced that, as a follow-up measure after designating 31 representative local wildlife species as "Gyeonggi Flagship Species" last year, it has created character-themed sculptures of these flagship species at ecological education facilities across the province.
The locations where the flagship species sculptures have been installed are as follows: Chilbo Ecological Environment Experience Center (Suwon Tree Frog), Jangja Lake Ecological Experience Center (Narrow-mouthed Toad), Gunpo National Sports Center (Narrow-mouthed Toad), Sihwa Lake Environmental Culture Center (Black-headed Gull), Ansan Reed Wetland Ecological Nuri Center (Yellowbilled Egret), Myeongji Mountain Ecological Exhibition Hall (Yellow-throated Marten, Otter), Yangpyeong Insect Museum (Stag Beetle), Hwanghaksan Arboretum Forest Museum (Varied Tit), and Mulmareum Arboretum (Firefly).
The installed flagship species sculptures are expected to serve as photo zones that attract visitors' interest and help raise awareness and recognition of flagship species among residents of the province.
Cha Seongsu, Director of the Climate, Environment and Energy Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "The flagship species sculptures are created in a character format that allows them to be more approachable to residents, and they will serve as an opportunity to increase interest and awareness of biodiversity in Gyeonggi Province." He added, "We will continue to carry out promotional and educational projects using flagship species in various spaces in the future."
