"All of our savings are in that bag... Please, help us find it."
The desperate plea of an elderly couple in their 70s, who visited the police station with trembling hands, led to a miraculous outcome after four hours.
On the afternoon of May 15, the couple, referred to as Mr. and Mrs. A, visited the Gijang Police Station’s Gijang Precinct in Busan, overwhelmed with despair in an unfamiliar city. It was their first trip after a big decision to leave Seoul. However, after accidentally leaving their travel bag in a taxi, they found themselves stranded with not a single won left.
What made the situation even more distressing was that the bag contained their entire life savings: 10 million won in cash and two don of gold.
As it was their first visit to the area, the couple could not remember the taxi model or the exact drop-off location. They had also paid in cash, making it difficult to track the vehicle. With all leads seemingly lost, officers at the Gijang Precinct began searching possible locations one by one in patrol cars, using CCTV footage and Mr. A's statements as clues.
The decisive clue came when Mr. A recalled, "I remember passing through a tollgate." Based on this, the police were able to pinpoint the drop-off spot and eventually identified the taxi. They then contacted the taxi company, obtained the driver's contact information, and arranged for the driver and the elderly couple to meet at the precinct.
In the end, the couple's travel bag was safely returned after four hours. The cash and gold inside were untouched.
Upon receiving their bag, Mr. and Mrs. A tearfully expressed their gratitude to the officers, repeatedly saying, "We can't believe something like this could happen... Thank you so much." Their words brought warm smiles to everyone at the precinct.
A police official stated, "It is our role to resolve citizens' anxiety and desperation," and added, "We will continue to stand by the citizens in the future."
