The Department of Fire Administration at Honam University announced on May 20 that student members of the university’s Specialized Volunteer Fire Brigade supported firefighters in suppressing the fire at the Kumho Tire site in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju.
The support activities on this day included participation from brigade members such as Kim Hongsoo (senior), Kang Junseo (junior), Kim Siwon and Kim Taemin (sophomores), and Oh Hamin and Jang Minseok (freshmen), all students of the Department of Fire Administration. Professor Kim Yongcheol quickly recognized the fire situation and voluntarily responded to the scene before an official dispatch order was issued to the Specialized Volunteer Fire Brigade.
They assisted with the establishment of the Gwangsan Fire Station’s emergency rescue control center, enforced access control to restricted areas, and handled the verification and registration of fire vehicles entering and exiting the scene. Through these tasks, they supported the rapid fire suppression efforts and the operation of the command headquarters.
As the fire site was extensive and secondary and tertiary collapse incidents occurred, they strictly controlled access to multiple hazardous areas to prevent further human and material damage. They also assisted with distributing meals and beverages to the exhausted personnel on site.
Professor Kim Yongcheol, who oversaw the field response, stated, "Members of the Specialized Volunteer Fire Brigade are always prepared to support and assist firefighters in any task, at any time." He added, "Even in dangerous situations like this, where toxic gases were present, the regular training and drills conducted at Gwangsan Fire Station enabled our members to support the firefighters quickly and accurately, thereby enhancing their practical field response capabilities."
