18th Century Yeongnam Landscapes by Joseon Painter Kim Yun-kyum on Display at Dong-A University Seokdang Museum

On May 20, Seokdang Museum at Dong-A University (Director: Kim Kisoo) announced that it is currently holding a special exhibition in its painting and calligraphy gallery, centered on the "Yeongnam Travel Album," a collection of true-view landscape paintings by Kim Yun-kyum, a renowned painter of the Joseon Dynasty, who personally traveled to famous sites in Yeongnam and captured them in his works.

This exhibition was organized after being selected for the "2025 Museum·Art Gallery Week 'Museum×Meet'" project, a contest hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korean Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), and managed by the Korean Museum Association.

"Yun-kyum Kim's Essential Yeongnam Travel Album" consists of 14 landscape paintings that vividly depict the natural scenery of the Yeongnam region in the 18th century. Kim Yun-kyum personally traveled to places such as Taejongdae and Molundae in Busan, Yeonggadae, Haeinsa Temple in Hapcheon, and Hwahanjeong Pavilion in Sancheong, capturing the Yeongnam region as it appeared more than 250 years ago on canvas.

A Seokdang Museum official commented, "This album is valuable not only as a record of historical landscapes but also as a visual documentation of the region's cultural heritage," adding, "In particular, the depictions of Molundae and Yeonggadae in Busan offer visitors the interesting experience of comparing the past and present appearances of these sites."

Visitors can appreciate the album in relay fashion, following the sequence in which the works unfold. The exhibition also features works such as "Gwangpodo" and the "Twelve-Panel Folding Screen of Geumgangjeondo" by Jeong Seon, as well as calligraphy by Kim Jeong-hee, flower-and-bird paintings, and letter paintings, providing insight into the essence of Joseon Dynasty art.

Nameplates and explanatory stickers are placed throughout the exhibition hall, and a special video explaining the exhibition's background is shown at the entrance. Notably, an AI voice audio guide using QR codes is available in both Korean and English, enhancing visitors' immersion.

Seokdang Museum is also preparing events and exclusive merchandise in connection with the exhibition. Visiting hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays, except Mondays and official holidays. For more information, please visit the Seokdang Museum website or call the museum directly.
