Two Weeks Until Election Day... Doing the Utmost to Win Over Voters in the Capital Region

Lee Jaemyung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, is campaigning in the northern Gyeonggi region on the 20th, marking his second consecutive day of campaigning in the Seoul metropolitan area. This move is interpreted as an effort to solidify public support, especially since the previous presidential election saw a tight race in the metropolitan area, with just two weeks remaining until election day.

Lee Jaemyung Targets Northern Gyeonggi Voters... Visits Goyang, Paju, and Gimpo Yonhap News

On this day, Lee plans to visit the northern Gyeonggi cities of Uijeongbu, Goyang, Paju, and Gimpo as part of his campaign tour. Cho Seungrae, the Democratic Party's spokesperson, stated during a morning briefing, "Lee will visit the northern Gyeonggi region, which has endured unique sacrifices due to decades of war threats and various regulations, and will express his ambition to make this area a hub for South Korea's 'peace economy.'"

In Uijeongbu, Lee will address issues of peace and security; in Goyang, he will focus on K-Content; in Paju, he will discuss advanced industrial complexes and the Peace Economy Special Zone. In Gimpo, he will present a vision for transportation innovation, highlighting the goal of making Gimpo and Seoul Gangnam accessible within 30 minutes.

The Seoul metropolitan area was the battleground where Lee faced a close contest against former President Yoon Sukyeol in the 20th presidential election. In Seoul, Lee and Yoon received 45.73% and 50.56% of the vote, respectively; in Incheon, the figures were 48.91% and 47.05%; and in Gyeonggi, 50.94% and 45.62%. Although Lee lost in Seoul, he secured narrow victories in Incheon and Gyeonggi.

With the direction of voter sentiment still uncertain, Lee is focusing intensely on the metropolitan area in the early part of this week, just two weeks before the presidential election. The previous day, he visited the Seoul districts of Yongsan, Yeongdeungpo, and Mapo. In the last presidential election, Lee trailed by 16.58 percentage points, 2.53 percentage points, and 7.04 percentage points, respectively, in these districts. On the 21st, he is scheduled to campaign in Incheon.

Meanwhile, at 10:30 a.m. on the same day, Lee will hold a Zoom online meeting titled "K-Initiative TV: Koreans Around the World Online Talk, Talk!" aimed at overseas Koreans. He plans to encourage overseas citizens to vote. According to Cho, Lee will listen to the real-life concerns faced by overseas Koreans in their respective countries, as well as their policy suggestions for their homeland.
