"No Self-Reflection After Martial Law"
Democratic Party Appoints 'Park Geun-hye Supporters President'
as Standing Chair of the National Unity Committee in the Election Campaign
Lee Jae Myung, the Democratic Party presidential candidate, is giving a speech at the "Revolution of Light" rally held at Cheonggye Plaza in Seoul on the 12th, marking the official start of the 21st presidential election campaign.
A group of supporters of former President Park Geun-hye declared their official support for Lee Jae Myung, the Democratic Party presidential candidate, upon joining the Democratic Party.
On the 19th, seven organizations, including Park Geun-hye Supporters, the Movement to Protect the Free Republic of Korea, the Political Reform Alliance, and the Gyeonggi Northern Branch of the People Power Party Responsible Members' Council, held a press conference at the Democratic Party headquarters. They stated, "We are withdrawing our support for and leaving the People Power Party, which has shown no self-reflection whatsoever after the martial law rebellion," announcing their decision.
The Park Geun-hye Supporters explained their reasons for supporting Lee by saying, "We have become disillusioned and angry at the shameless identity of a party that denies even the slightest sense of responsibility for the national turmoil and division that led to the impeachment of two former presidents, instead blaming others. We have decided to publicly declare our support for Candidate Lee, who seeks to practice national unity and harmony."
Meanwhile, organizations such as 'Hongsamo' and 'Hong Sarang', groups of supporters of former Daegu Mayor Hong Joonpyo, also declared their support for Lee Jae Myung, the Democratic Party presidential candidate, on the 13th. They stated, "After Kim Moonsoo was elected as the candidate, the People Power Party's failure to achieve a unified candidacy has left an irreparable wound in the hearts of countless voters who have supported the conservative party out of concern for the future of the Republic of Korea. The People Power Party no longer deserves to be called the representative conservative party of the Republic of Korea."
