The police have launched an investigation into a 'no-show scam' incident in which someone impersonated a firefighter during the Kumho Tire Gwangju factory fire.
According to the Gwangju Nambu Police Station on May 19, a restaurant owner in his 50s, identified as A, reported the previous day that "someone impersonated a firefighter, ordered food worth 150,000 won to be delivered to the Kumho Tire factory fire site, but never showed up."
On May 17, A received a phone call requesting "food for the fire site, specifically 15 servings of kimchi jjim," but the person who placed the order failed to appear at the agreed time.
Afterwards, the person called again, said they would "arrive soon," left the contact information of a specific company, and even asked A to purchase protective suits on their behalf.
A, who had already prepared the food for takeout, reported to the police after suffering damages when the person never showed up.
A police official stated that they plan to investigate A and others to determine the exact circumstances of the damages.
