Gwangju Students Promote May 18 in Toronto

Photo Exhibition and Performances... Exchange with Local Students

Gwangju Students Promote May 18 in Toronto Gwangju students held a photo exhibition titled "Gwangju Spirit, Great Legacy," featuring records and truths of the May 18 event, at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto, Canada, on the 18th. About 40 photos held by the Gwangju students were observed by Canadian citizens. Provided by Gwangju Office of Education

The Gwangju Office of Education announced on May 19 that local high school students participated in the "45th Anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising Commemoration Event" held in Toronto, Canada, on May 18 (local time).


This event was hosted by the Korean Canadian Association in Toronto and supported by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Canada and the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Toronto. The Gwangju students visited Canada as part of the "To the World Through Books" program, having been invited by the Korean Canadian Association in Toronto.


The students organized a photo exhibition and performed a flash mob and an Arirang performance under the theme "Gwangju Spirit, Great Legacy" at the main auditorium of the Korean Canadian Cultural Association in Toronto. The photo exhibition featured about 40 photographs capturing the records and truths of the May 18 Democratic Uprising.

Gwangju Students Promote May 18 in Toronto On the 18th at 6 p.m. (local time), students from Gwangju performed a flash mob of the "March for the Beloved" at the Korean Canadian Association. Provided by Gwangju Office of Education

Local students and citizens also participated in the event, sharing the history and significance of May 18, and the event attracted attention from local media.


Kim Jeonghee, president of the Korean Canadian Association in Toronto, stated, "The Gwangju students are learning and practicing the values of democracy and human rights," and added, "I expect that this exchange will further elevate Korea's standing in the world."


Kim Jihyeok, president of the student council at Seongdeok High School, expressed, "I am glad to be able to share the meaning of May 18 with the world," and added, "I want to further promote the importance of democracy."

Superintendent Lee Jeongseon remarked, "This has become an opportunity for students to convey the values of democracy and human rights to the world," and pledged, "The Office of Education will actively support the succession of the May 18 spirit."
