The Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul announced on May 19 that the main perpetrator, identified as Cho (24), has been arrested on charges of insurance fraud, and 18 accomplices will be referred to the prosecution without detention.
According to the police, from January 2022 to August 2024, the group intentionally caused traffic accidents by targeting vehicles changing lanes, then falsely claimed hospitalizations as part of their scheme. They are suspected of receiving a total of 240 million won in insurance payouts from nine insurance companies, including DB Insurance, through 31 separate claims.
The police investigation revealed that all of the suspects were friends who attended elementary, middle, and high school together in the same neighborhood.
The police launched an investigation after receiving a report of suspected insurance fraud from an insurance company. They confirmed the allegations through repeated hospital admission records and analysis of black box footage.
A police official stated, "We will respond with strict investigations, including arrests, to eradicate insurance fraud crimes that undermine the soundness of social order."
