Dongjak District to Provide Up to 400,000 Won for Elderly Drivers Returning Even Unused Licenses

Dongjak District in Seoul is significantly strengthening its support for voluntary driver’s license returns to prevent traffic accidents involving elderly drivers. On May 19, the district announced that seniors aged 70 and older who return their driver’s licenses will receive an additional transportation card worth 200,000 won from the district itself, in addition to the 200,000 won transportation card provided by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

As a result, starting this year, all individuals who return their licenses will receive a transportation card worth 400,000 won, regardless of the reason for return or their driving history. This is the first case among Seoul’s autonomous districts. Last year, only those who had driven within the past year received 340,000 won, while other returnees received 100,000 won.

The support is available to seniors aged 70 or older (born on or before December 31, 1955) who are registered residents of Dongjak District. From May 19, they can visit their local community center to return their driver’s license and immediately receive the transportation card. If a representative returns the license on behalf of the senior, they must first return the license at the police station and bring the license cancellation notification along with identification for both the returnee and the representative.

The additional 200,000 won transportation card provided by the district will only be given to those who return their licenses after May 13 of this year. The card can be used not only on public transportation and trains, but also at T-money affiliated stores, including convenience stores and franchise restaurants.

Park Ilha, Mayor of Dongjak District, stated, “In response to an aging society, we have expanded support for voluntary driver’s license returns to prevent traffic accidents involving seniors,” adding, “We will also conduct traffic safety education for seniors and seek ways to further improve their mobility.”
