Kim Gyeri, the lawyer who once referred to former President Yoon Suk-yeol's emergency martial law as an "enlightenment decree," has made a surprise application to join the People Power Party. Kim previously served as a member of the defense team at the Constitutional Court during the impeachment trial of former President Yoon.
On the 17th, Kim stated, "This is the time for candidate Kim Moonsoo, and he is the main character on this stage," adding, "For the first time in my life, I have decided to join a political party and have applied for membership in the People Power Party." On the same day, former President Yoon officially announced his departure from the party.
Kim explained the background of his decision by emphasizing, "It is important to inform the public of Kim Moonsoo's proven abilities, the vision and pledges he presents, and even his 'pull-up' skills." He continued, "At the time, public opinion opposing the impeachment exceeded 50 percent. That momentum continued to grow to the point where further polling was unnecessary, and I believe this is enough to defeat candidate Lee Jaemyung."
However, there are concerns that Kim's entry into the party could actually become a burden. A source within the People Power Party commented, "It is questionable whether Kim Gyeri, who used the term 'enlightenment decree,' joining the party at this time will be beneficial. With former President Yoon's departure, the party is crossing the 'river of impeachment.'"
Meanwhile, Seok Donghyun, also a former member of the defense team during Yoon's impeachment trial and a member of Kim Moonsoo's campaign committee, resigned from his campaign post following Yoon's announcement. Seok stated, "As of today, I am stepping down from my position as Chair of the Special Committee on Civil Society in Kim Moonsoo's campaign committee, and I will support the election as an ordinary citizen."
