Minimizing Damage Through Central and Local Government Cooperation
Lee Jae Myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party, visited and offered his condolences to the residents who were affected by the fire at the Kumho Tire factory in Gwangsan District, Gwangju.
According to the Democratic Party and others on May 18, Lee visited the evacuation center set up at the Universiade Gymnasium of Gwangju Women's University around 10 p.m. the previous night, after completing his schedule for the eve of the 5·18 Democratization Movement commemoration, to meet with the affected residents. At that time, the main fire at the factory had not yet been brought under control.
After receiving a briefing on the situation from Park Byung Kyu, the head of Gwangsan District, Lee visited the evacuees staying in temporary tents to check on their well-being and offer words of comfort.
Lee said, "The residents are experiencing significant inconvenience due to the sudden fire," and added, "I hope the fire is extinguished quickly and that the injured recover soon." He continued, "The central and local governments will work together to ensure prompt support for recovery efforts."

Yang Bu Nam, the head of the Democratic Party's Gwangju City election committee, also accompanied Lee at the site. Yang stated, "We will do our utmost to extinguish the fire, actively work on recovery and compensation for the residents, propose designating the area as a disaster zone, and prepare comprehensive measures to prevent a recurrence."
The Democratic Party expressed its position regarding the fire, stating, "We will do our best to protect public safety through a swift response and thorough follow-up measures."
