The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced that it will conduct a nationwide inspection for two months from May 19 to July 17 to prevent safety accidents and substandard construction at construction sites during the rainy season. The ministry, together with 12 affiliated agencies including regional land management offices such as Seoul, the Korea Infrastructure Safety and Technology Corporation, and Korea Expressway Corporation, will jointly inspect 1,915 construction sites across the country that are vulnerable to heavy rainfall, such as excavation sites.
The inspection will cover whether flood control measures have been established, whether preemptive actions have been taken for flood risk factors such as retaining walls and embankments, and the installation status of drainage facilities. For road and railway sites, the focus will be on the management of cut and fill slopes and the adequacy of drainage installation. For apartment and building sites, the inspection will check for subsidence or damage to surrounding facilities caused by excavation and the status of measurement management. At airport sites, pavement surface evenness will be inspected. The authorities will also provide guidance to ensure compliance with the three basic principles for preventing heat-related illnesses, such as heatstroke, to protect workers from safety accidents caused by heatwaves.
Sites operated by the top 100 construction companies where fatal accidents have occurred, as well as sites where serious industrial accidents have taken place, will be inspected together with external experts. There will also be unannounced inspections. Authorities plan to check whether the fall accident prevention measures, announced jointly by relevant ministries in February, are being properly implemented at construction sites. If substandard construction or inadequate safety and quality management is found, strict measures such as penalty points or fines will be imposed. Kim Taebyeong, Director of Technical Safety Policy at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, stated, "We will do our utmost to ensure safety management at construction sites, as well as to prevent ground subsidence and fall accidents."
