The Fruit of a True Hometown Team Achieved Together with the Citizens of Changwon
The professional basketball team LG Sakers, based in Changwon Special City, Gyeongnam, has finally achieved its first championship title in the finals, 28 years after its founding in 1997, creating a moving chapter in history together with the citizens.
On May 17, LG Sakers secured the championship by defeating the Seoul SK Knights 62-58 in Game 7 of the 2024-2025 professional basketball finals at Jamsil Student Gymnasium in Seoul, clinching the series with 4 wins and 3 losses.
Founded alongside the launch of the professional basketball league in the 1997-1998 season, LG finally fulfilled its long-cherished dream in its third attempt at the finals, ending a 28-year wait.
Notably, LG Sakers is the only team among the ten clubs in Korean professional basketball that has never changed its home city or parent company. Even during the IMF financial crisis, the team remained steadfast, never relocating and always representing "Changwon" alongside its citizens. This consistent local identity and deep community connection have made LG Sakers a true "citizen's club," and this championship is the culmination of those efforts.
After several years of disappointment in the playoffs, LG finished second in the regular season this year and began another challenge. They finally achieved a hard-fought victory in the intense Game 7 of the finals. This historic win, achieved together with the citizens of Changwon, further enhances the value of Changwon's sports brand.
Jang Geumyong, acting mayor of Changwon Special City, stated, "I sincerely congratulate LG Sakers on their glorious achievement of winning the finals for the first time since the team's founding," adding, "This proud result was made possible by LG's unwavering commitment to Changwon as its home and by the wholehearted support of the citizens of Changwon Special City."
He went on to say, "The city will continue to strive for the development of local sports and the expansion of fan culture in the future."
