A British Weight Loss Clinic Specialist Says
"Cold Showers Can Promote Fat Burning"
A claim has been made that finishing the last 30 seconds of a shower with cold water can promote fat burning.
According to multiple foreign media outlets, including The Sun in the UK on May 17, Professor Franklin Joseph, who runs a weight loss clinic, stated, "You can increase your fat-burning rate without dramatically increasing your exercise," and added, "A cold water shower for the last 30 seconds may seem simple, but it can actually have a positive impact on body fat reduction."
When exposed to cold water, the body consumes more energy to maintain its core temperature. During this process, brown fat is activated. While typical white fat stores energy, brown fat generates heat and consumes energy, which can help with weight loss.
Professor Joseph emphasized, "A cold shower cannot completely replace aerobic exercise," but also argued, "If practiced consistently, it can be effective in supporting fat burning."
He further advised, "It's best to start with about 30 seconds and gradually increase the duration," and added, "If you combine this with a healthy diet and regular exercise, the effects will be even greater."
Several studies have been conducted on the health benefits of cold showers.
According to some research, cold showers may also help strengthen the immune system, boost metabolism, alleviate chronic muscle pain, and reduce feelings of depression. Low water temperatures constrict blood vessels, which can help improve blood circulation throughout the body. Cold showers may also have a soothing effect on the skin. However, caution is needed depending on individual health conditions. In particular, those with cardiovascular disease should consult a medical professional before attempting cold showers.
Meanwhile, hot showers also have their own advantages.
Hot water showers can help relax muscles, thereby reducing pain. Additionally, steam from hot water can help clear nasal passages and loosen phlegm, which may provide relief for respiratory symptoms.
However, hot water causes blood vessels to expand or dilate. It can worsen acne or make the skin appear redder.
Hot water can also dry out the skin and hair, wash away skin oils, potentially lead to increased oil production, and cause clogged pores.
