On May 17, Lee Jaemyung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, addressed the fire that broke out at the Kumho Tire factory in Gwangju, urging fire authorities to mobilize all available resources to ensure a swift response.

Through social networking services (SNS) on the same day, Lee stated, "Above all, I hope that multiple layers of safety measures will be implemented to prevent any casualties."
Lee also emphasized, "The central and local governments must work together to thoroughly support recovery efforts and assistance for residents' health issues and damage to surrounding areas caused by the large amount of hazardous substances released by the fire."
He further stated, "The government must inspect safety systems to ensure that there are no gaps in public safety, such as factory fires involving flammable materials during the election period. The Democratic Party will also actively cooperate."
On this day, Lee is scheduled to campaign intensively, traveling from Naju, Jeollanam-do in the morning to Gwangju in the afternoon.
