At approximately 7:10 a.m. on May 17, a fire broke out at the Kumho Tire Gwangju factory in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, and firefighting authorities are currently working to extinguish the blaze.
The fire is believed to have started in the tire production process. In response, firefighting authorities issued Response Level 1 and mobilized all available personnel under their jurisdiction to prevent the flames from spreading to adjacent buildings.
Immediately after the fire, eight people inside the factory evacuated on their own, and two others were rescued by firefighters. As of now, there have been no reported casualties.
The Gwangsan-gu District Office sent emergency disaster text messages to residents of nearby apartments, advising them to remain vigilant for safety. Vehicles traveling on the road from Sochon Seora Apartment to the factory entrance were directed to take detours.
The police and firefighting authorities plan to investigate the exact cause of the fire as soon as the extinguishing operations are completed.
