A Haitian woman seeks revenge for her family lost to gangs
Feeds poisoned dumplings to gang members
Other gang members retaliate by burning her house
She turns herself in and requests police protection
In Haiti, which is considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world, a female street vendor handed over food laced with poison to gang members who controlled the local area, resulting in the deaths of at least 40 people before she turned herself in to the police.

According to recent reports from foreign media outlets such as the UK’s Daily Star, earlier this month in Kenscoff, a village southeast of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, a woman who ran a street stall gave empanadas (a food similar to fried dumplings) containing poison to gang members, killing them. This woman, who sold empanadas, added a chemical substance used as pesticide or insecticide to the empanadas she made. She then handed the food to the gang members, expressing her gratitude by saying, "Thank you for protecting the village."

About 40 gang members who ate the food containing pesticide suffered from severe abdominal pain and convulsions and tried to seek hospital treatment, but all died before they could reach the hospital.
Afterwards, other gang members who suspected the street vendor went to her house, broke in, and set it on fire. However, the woman had already left her home out of fear of retaliation, so she was able to escape harm. It has been reported that she is unharmed.
After committing the crime, the woman went to the police station herself to turn herself in and requested protection. She stated to the police that she had acted alone and committed the crime without any accomplices. Police investigations revealed that this woman had lost family members to the gang members. The police are investigating the motive and details of the incident.
This incident starkly illustrates the reality of Haiti, which is plagued by gang violence. According to the United Nations, in 2024 alone, 5,600 people have lost their lives in Haiti due to gang-related violence. In particular, the capital Port-au-Prince is considered the area most heavily influenced by gangs. The gang involved in this incident, Viv Ansanm, has long controlled the village. This gang has reportedly committed major crimes such as robbery, kidnapping, and murder against local residents for many years.
