This meeting was convened as a preemptive response, following the issuance of a heavy rain warning for the entire city, with a maximum of 120mm of heavy rain recorded (based on Onam), and up to 31mm of additional rainfall forecasted between 4 PM and 9 PM.
At around 4:27 PM on the same day, more than 73.5mm of intense rain per hour fell near Onam-eup in Namyangju City.
As a result, a heavy rain warning was issued for Namyangju City, and an emergency heavy rain disaster alert text message was sent at 4:27 PM. This is the first time this year that such an emergency heavy rain alert has been issued. The emergency heavy rain text is sent when rainfall exceeds 72mm per hour.
Focusing on the Citizen Safety Division, Namyangju City took urgent measures, including the immediate activation of the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, forward deployment of eight drainage pump stations, and control of riverside walkways, entrances, and Saewolgyo bridges.
Additionally, to prevent further damage, the city has strengthened monitoring of disaster-prone areas and is closely monitoring the operational status of drainage facilities and river water levels in real time according to weather conditions.
Furthermore, the city has established a close cooperation system with related agencies such as the police and fire departments to ensure a rapid response in case of emergencies.
Mayor Joo Gwangdeok emphasized, "Since there are significant differences in rainfall by region, such as Jinjeop-eup, Jingeon-eup, and Onam-eup, it is important to implement field-oriented responses tailored to the characteristics of each area. In particular, the old downtown area is at higher risk of flooding, so more detailed inspections and measures must be strengthened."
He added, "Please work not only with public officials but also with local volunteer organizations to establish practical heavy rain countermeasures that citizens can directly experience."
