The Gwangju Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced on May 16 that it had hosted a policy meeting, inviting Democratic Party of Korea lawmakers from the Gwangju region to discuss major local economic issues ahead of the 21st presidential election.
The meeting, held in the morning at the Holiday Inn Gwangju Hotel, was organized to directly communicate the current status of Gwangju’s industries and the voices of local businesses to regional lawmakers, with the aim of having these issues reflected in the presidential candidates’ regional policy pledges and in future national administration. The meeting was attended by a total of 30 participants, including Chairman Han Sangwon, vice chairmen, standing members, and Yang Bunam (Gwangju Seo-gu Eul), head of the Democratic Party’s Gwangju City Chapter.
During the meeting, the Gwangju Chamber of Commerce and Industry presented a policy booklet titled "Key Economic Issues of the Gwangju Region," which it had prepared ahead of the 21st presidential election. A total of six on-site proposals were also made.
The main issues proposed at the meeting included: ▲Relocation of the Gwangju civil-military airport and establishment of a gateway airport for the southwestern region ▲Improvement and expansion of the agrivoltaic system ▲Suggestions for strengthening the global competitiveness of Gwangju Global Motors (GGM) ▲A cautious approach to re-pushing for the revision of the Yellow Envelope Act ▲Support focused on industrial accident prevention for small and medium-sized enterprises and revision of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act ▲Improvement of inheritance tax and business succession deduction systems.
Han Sangwon, chairman of the Gwangju Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stated, "Gwangju and Jeonnam have ample potential to lead new industries such as future mobility, energy, and AI. However, there are also many urgent issues that need to be addressed, such as the relocation of the Gwangju civil-military airport and improvement of the agrivoltaic system. I hope the opinions delivered here today will be actively reflected in national policy, and the Chamber of Commerce will continue to serve as a bridge between political parties, the government, and the local business community."
Yang Bunam, head of the Democratic Party’s Gwangju City Chapter, said, "Close communication with the local business community is a valuable foundation for establishing policies focused on people’s livelihoods. The city chapter will make every effort to ensure that the issues discussed today are faithfully conveyed to the party headquarters and the presidential candidates."
The Gwangju Chamber of Commerce and Industry plans to continue actively conveying the realities and demands of local businesses through various policy meetings, and to lead efforts to strengthen industrial competitiveness and revitalize the local economy based on public-private cooperation.
