Ministry of Science and ICT Visits Dongnam Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences... "Aiming for World-Leading Radiological Research"

Public Convergence Research Policy Officer
Reviews Progress of Heavy Ion Therapy Center and Export-Oriented New Research Reactor Projects

On May 14, the Public Convergence Research Policy Officer of the Ministry of Science and ICT visited a large-scale national research facility located in the Dongnam Medical Science General Industrial Complex in Gijang-gun, Busan, to review the progress of ongoing projects and listen to the opinions of each institution.

This visit was arranged so that Jeong Taekryeol, the newly appointed Public Convergence Research Policy Officer of the Ministry of Science and ICT, could directly tour the major national research facilities in the fields of nuclear and radiation science located in the Gijang area of Busan, inspect the progress of their initiatives, and hear feedback from the field.

Prior to the site visit, a brief progress briefing was held at the Dongnam Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences. Attendees included Jeong Taekryeol, Public Convergence Research Policy Officer of the Ministry of Science and ICT; Lee Byunghee, Officer of Nuclear Research and Development; Lee Changhun, Director of the Dongnam Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences; Ji Euigyu, Acting Director of the Gijang Heavy Ion Therapy Center at Seoul National University Hospital; Kim Minhwan, Head of the Export-Oriented New Research Reactor Project; Choi Kanghyuk, Researcher at the Isotope Utilization Research Center; and Jo Yunseo, Head of the Semiconductor New Materials Division at the Advanced Industry Bureau of Busan City.

After touring the Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Center, which is scheduled to open in June, and the Advanced Regenerative Medicine GMP facility at the Dongnam Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences, Jeong Taekryeol said, "Despite challenging external conditions, I am grateful for your efforts to strengthen essential medical services in partnership with the local community, and for operating the first GMP manufacturing facility in the Yeongnam region, thereby contributing to the improvement of regional medical welfare through the production and supply of radiopharmaceuticals. I hope that by actively operating a consultative body with the Export-Oriented New Research Reactor, the Isotope Utilization Research Center, and the Heavy Ion Therapy Center, and by holding regular meetings, we can enhance national research and development competitiveness and discover new industries. If research institutes under the Ministry of Science and ICT work together, I believe we can secure world-leading competitiveness in radiological and medical science research."

In response, Lee Changhun, Director of the Dongnam Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences, stated, "We will actively seek ways to achieve mutual growth through even more active exchanges in the future. We will faithfully fulfill our mission by advancing the latest research and development in radiological and medical science, establishing a radiation disaster response system, and creating a locally complete essential medical system. I ask for your continued interest and support so that the Dongnam Medical Science General Industrial Complex can establish itself as a successful model of a world-class radiological and medical science cluster."

The Dongnam Radiological and Medical Science General Industrial Complex is being developed on approximately 450,000 pyeong in Jangan-eup, Gijang-gun, Busan. Since the opening of the Dongnam Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences in 2010, additional facilities?including the Export-Oriented New Research Reactor, the Heavy Ion Therapy Center, and the Isotope Fusion Research Infrastructure?are scheduled to open sequentially by 2027. In addition, the Power Semiconductor Commercialization Center and related companies are clustered in the area, making it a research complex with a concentration of key radiation infrastructure. According to estimates by Busan City, upon completion of the industrial complex, it is expected to generate approximately 2.011 trillion won in production inducement effects and create about 20,000 jobs.
