On May 16, Gwangju City announced that it will operate a special program called the "Gwangju Peace Train," which will take citizens to visit the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on June 13.

This Peace Train has been planned to commemorate the spirit of Gwangju in May 1980 and to allow citizens to directly experience the values of peace and unification. The city will operate the "Gwangju Peace Train" twice, in June and October, to mark the 25th anniversary of the June 15 South-North Joint Declaration and the 18th anniversary of the October 4 South-North Summit Declaration. The first trip will take place on June 13, with a special train running from Gwangju Hyocheon Station to Imjingang Station.

On board the train, citizens will be able to participate in cultural content such as a music cafe themed around May 1980, a nostalgic snack quiz, and a theatrical performance. After arriving at Imjingang Station, participants will tour security sites in the DMZ area of Paju City, where they will directly confront the reality of division and reflect on the meaning of peace and unification.

About 370 citizens are expected to board this train, and applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis through the Gwangju City website starting from May 16. Any citizen residing in Gwangju is eligible to participate, and the participation fee is 110,000 won per person.

Park Yongsoo, Director of the Department of Democracy, Human Rights and Peace, said, "The Gwangju Peace Train is a program that allows people to directly experience and expand peace policies for the Korean Peninsula, based on the spirit of May. Gwangju City will continue to develop more diverse citizen participation programs to take the lead in spreading the values of peace and unification."
