Seongdong-gu Conducts Safety Inspections of 180 Construction Sites Ahead of Rainy Season... 24-Hour Flood and Storm Preparedness

Seongdong-gu in Seoul (District Mayor Jung Wono) has announced that it will conduct intensive safety inspections of construction sites within the district to prevent safety accidents during the summer rainy season.

This inspection, which will be carried out for four weeks from May 12 to June 11, before the onset of heavy rains and heat waves, aims to eliminate risk factors in advance to prevent accidents and to strengthen the overall safety of construction sites.

The inspection targets a total of 180 facilities, including construction sites, aging buildings, retaining walls, and embankments in the district that require intensive management. Of these, 109 sites will be inspected together with external experts.

The main inspection items include checking for subsidence or cracks in the upper and lower parts of retaining walls and embankments, as well as the maintenance status of drainage systems. For construction sites, the inspection will focus on whether there is any ground subsidence around the site, the status of measurement management, and on-site management in preparation for heavy rain and strong winds.

Any issues identified during the inspection will, in principle, be corrected immediately on site. If any serious defects or risk factors are found, emergency measures will be taken, and continuous management will be maintained until the risk factors are resolved.

In addition, from May 15 to October 15, the "Flood and Storm Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters" will operate 24 hours a day to ensure thorough preparedness. The Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters consists of a total of 13 working groups, including the Situation Management General Group, Traffic Countermeasures Group, and Search, Rescue, and Emergency Group, which can respond organically to various disaster situations. Depending on weather (preliminary) advisories, a total of six emergency duty stages will be activated: Normal, Preliminary Reinforcement, Reinforcement, and Emergency Stages 1 to 3 (Heavy Rain · Typhoon Watch, Heavy Rain · Typhoon Warning, Flood Warning).

Furthermore, to prevent casualties during heavy rainfall, the district will replace deteriorated and faulty sewage manholes and disaster prevention equipment, and will take measures to ensure stable flood prevention. In addition, a total of 125 care officials and companion partners will be assigned to households vulnerable to flooding to do their utmost to prevent casualties caused by flooding.

Prior to this, the district completed advance inspections for flood prevention, including: inspection of flood control facilities and flood-prone areas; pre-inspection of water pumps; designation and test operation of floodgate managers; test operation of rainwater pumping stations and drainage gates; purchase and deployment of flood control materials; inspection of drainage facilities at large construction sites in preparation for the rainy season; and pre-inspection of river early warning and access control facilities, as well as other flood control and river facilities.

Jung Wono, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, "We are thoroughly inspecting construction sites and other facilities to respond quickly to natural disasters such as floods and to prevent summer safety accidents in advance," adding, "We will make every effort to create safe workplaces where all workers can work with peace of mind and to protect the daily safety of all residents."
