156 Tons of Waste Collected from Expressways Last Year
Seoul Facilities Corporation: "Intensive Management Through Citizen Reports"

The Seoul Facilities Corporation announced that last year, a total of 156 tons of illegally dumped waste was collected from 12 expressways for automobiles, including Olympic-daero and Gangbyeonbuk-ro. In response, the corporation will launch a citizen reporting campaign and implement intensive management, focusing on sections where illegal dumping occurs frequently.

According to the corporation, over the past five years, an average of 156 tons of waste per year has been generated on expressways for automobiles such as Olympic-daero and Gangbyeonbuk-ro. The types of waste are diverse, including Styrofoam, cardboard boxes, furniture, home appliances, and construction materials. Illegally dumped waste not only damages the cityscape but also increases the risk of traffic accidents, making it a factor that threatens the safety of citizens.

To prevent illegal dumping, the corporation operates a KakaoTalk reporting channel and, this year, will offer a reward of 10,000 won for each report to encourage greater citizen participation. Reports can include not only illegal dumping of waste but also improper loading and vehicles without covers. Citizens can add the KakaoTalk channel ‘Seoul Expressway Illegal Dumping Report’ and send photos or videos (including the date and time of recording) where the vehicle license plate is clearly visible.

Additionally, the corporation has designated about 30 habitual dumping sites, including areas in front of Noryangjin Fish Market on Olympic-daero, near Sky Park in the Nanji direction on Gangbyeonbuk-ro, and near Gunja Bridge on Dongbu Expressway. Intensive management measures such as installing closed-circuit (CC)TVs, guidance banners, and anti-dumping fences have been put in place at these locations.

Park Youngyeong, President of the Seoul Facilities Corporation, stated, “Illegal dumping of waste on expressways for automobiles is a serious issue that threatens the lives and safety of citizens. We ask for your active participation and reporting,” and added, “We will do our best to create a more attractive and safer expressway environment that all citizens can use comfortably.”
