Gijang County in Busan is launching the 'Transportation Expense Support Program for Low-Income Severely Disabled Persons' this month to reduce the financial burden on local low-income residents with severe disabilities and to guarantee their right to mobility.
This program was established to enhance the actual convenience of movement for persons with severe disabilities, reflecting the characteristics of rural and fishing village areas where transportation infrastructure is relatively underdeveloped.
At the end of last year, the county enacted the 'Ordinance on Transportation Expense Support for Low-Income Severely Disabled Persons in Gijang County.' After securing the necessary budget and completing related preparations this year, the county began full-scale support on May 12, 2025.
Eligible applicants are those whose resident registration address is in Gijang County as of the application date and who are classified as 'persons with severe disabilities' either receiving basic livelihood security benefits or belonging to the next-lowest income group. Transportation expenses are provided at 30,000 won per person per quarter and are paid on the 10th of the month following the quarter for which the application was made.
Applications can be submitted in person at the administrative welfare center of the applicant's town or township of residence. For more details, inquiries can be made to the Senior and Disabled Welfare Division of Gijang County Office or to each town and township administrative welfare center.
County Governor Jung Jongbok stated, "Because many areas in Gijang County have low transportation accessibility, persons with disabilities face significant restrictions on going out and participating in society," and added, "We hope that this transportation expense support will serve as an opportunity to make a real improvement in the quality of life for persons with disabilities in the region."
