Prime Minister Carney to King Charles III on Trump's State Visit Invitation: "Canadians Not Impressed"

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has indirectly expressed his disappointment over King Charles III of the United Kingdom's decision to extend a state visit invitation to U.S. President Donald Trump.

In an interview with Sky News UK on the 14th (local time), Prime Minister Carney commented on the incident in February when British Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited the White House and delivered King Charles III's invitation for a state visit to President Trump. He stated, "To be honest, considering the (political) situation at the time, I don't think the Canadian people were impressed by that gesture," adding, "At that time, we had a clear stance on issues of sovereignty."

The situation Prime Minister Carney referred to was President Trump's repeated threats that Canada should become the '51st state' of the United States. Carney pointed out that, at a time when Canada was angered by unfair treatment from its ally the United States, it was out of step with Canadian sentiment for King Charles III, the head of state of Canada, to send a state visit invitation to President Trump.

President Trump has now received a state visit invitation from the United Kingdom for the second time, which is unprecedented for one individual. During his first term in June 2019, President Trump made a state visit to the United Kingdom at the invitation of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

King Charles III is scheduled to visit Canada for two days on the 26th and 27th, and on the 27th, he will attend the opening ceremony of Parliament and deliver a national address. In Canada, there are growing calls for King Charles III to more clearly express his support for Canadian sovereignty.
