Mudeungsan Hike, Discussions, and Bongha Visit
Citizen-Participation Memorial Events Continue
To mark the 16th anniversary of the passing of President Roh Moo-hyun, a series of memorial events involving citizens are being held in Gwangju.
The Gwangju Regional Committee of the Roh Moo-hyun Foundation announced on May 15 that, under the slogan "Beyond Memory, Democracy Again," it has organized citizen-participation programs throughout May in the Gwangju area, including mountain hikes, discussions, and a visit to Bongha Village.
The first event was a memorial hike along the "Roh Moo-hyun Trail" on Mudeungsan Mountain, held on May 11. About 60 citizens participated in the hike, walking the mountain paths around Jeungsimsa Temple and reflecting on President Roh Moo-hyun's life and philosophy.
Next, at 1 p.m. on May 17, the "Roundtable Discussion of 100 People" will take place in the small conference room on the third floor of the Kimdaejung Convention Center. The discussion, themed "Beyond Memory, Questioning Democracy Again," will be open to citizens, youth, and activists to freely share their views, followed by a special lecture by National Assembly member Park Kyuntaek.
The discussion topics include: ▲Citizens and the Constitution ▲Roh Moo-hyun's Leadership ▲The Foundation's Future Vision and the Role of the Local Community. Participants will receive commemorative gifts, and outstanding panelists will be awarded.
Finally, on May 23, members of the committee and citizens from Gwangju will attend the official memorial ceremony held in Bongha Village, Gimhae, South Gyeongsang Province.
Ha Seongcheon, Secretary-General of the Gwangju Regional Committee of the Roh Moo-hyun Foundation, stated, "Recalling the late president's words that 'the last bastion of democracy is the organized power of awakened citizens,' we will carry on his legacy through participation and action."
