First Korean Female Attorney Appointed as Standing Member of SIAC Court of Arbitration
Seyeon Kim, an attorney at Kim & Chang (Judicial Research and Training Institute, 23rd class), has been appointed as a standing member of the SIAC (Singapore International Arbitration Centre) Court of Arbitration.
SIAC, established in 1991, is one of the leading arbitration institutions in Asia. In 2013, it launched the first international court of arbitration in Asia. The Court of Arbitration is responsible for decisions regarding jurisdictional review, appointment or challenge of arbitrators, and other matters related to arbitration procedures. Among the current standing members of the Court of Arbitration, which consists of about 30 people, Kim is the only Korean attorney.
Kim stated, "SIAC has recently become the most preferred arbitration institution among parties in Asia, including Korea. I am pleased to be able to contribute as a standing member of the SIAC Court of Arbitration. Drawing on my experience as a judge in Korea and as a standing member of other arbitration institutions, I will help SIAC fulfill its function as an arbitration institution."
Kim is also serving as a standing member of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). Currently, Kim is the president of the Korean Council for International Arbitration Practice, a member of the International Arbitration Committee of the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board International Arbitration Center, a member of the Mumbai Centre for International Arbitration, and a member of the Court of Arbitration of the Swiss Arbitration Centre. Recently, Kim also led a successful arbitration award in a shareholder agreement dispute between a domestic company and Swiss shareholders.
