Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority Pilots Smart Technology in School Zones with Real-Time Warning System

The Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority is launching a pilot project to enhance safety in school zones using smart technology.

On May 14, the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority announced that it will implement a project to build a real-time warning system utilizing a dedicated communication network at intersections in Songdo International City, and to test how effective this system is in improving safety.

To achieve this, 1,000 ultra-wideband-based location recognition tags (UWB-Tags) will be distributed to elementary school students, and the effectiveness of traffic safety will be analyzed along the school route connecting Sinjeong Middle School, Myeongseon Elementary School, and Posco High School.

The tags, which can be attached to clothing or bags, collect real-time distance information between students and vehicles. They are linked to AI-based CCTV and ultra-wideband receiving infrastructure installed at intersections. When a risk of accident is detected, the tags function as communication terminals that send warning messages not only to students but also to drivers of vehicles, kickboards, and bicycles via their mobile phones.

An official from the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority stated, "Applying smart city technology for children's safety is a very important task," and added, "We will build an advanced Cooperative-Intelligent Transport System (C-ITS) to create a safer city."

Meanwhile, the project to advance the pilot infrastructure using a dedicated communication network is being led by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Information Society Agency (NIA), and is jointly carried out by the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority and LG Electronics.
