Jeonnam Province to Relocate Coastal Fish Farms... Aiming to Improve Fish Farm Environments

Jeonnam Province is investing 3.3 billion won in a coastal fish farm relocation project to improve the crowded environment of coastal fish farms and establish a sustainable foundation for the fisheries industry.

The coastal fish farm relocation project has been underway since 2011. It aims to systematically relocate existing overcrowded fish farms by taking into account factors such as the direction of seawater flow, thereby facilitating smoother water circulation and improving the marine environment of both the fish farms and surrounding waters.

The sea aquaculture area in Jeonnam covers 120,516 hectares, accounting for 75% of the national total, making it a key base for seafood production. However, overcrowded fish farms have been identified as a major cause of deteriorating fish farm environments and declining productivity.

For this project, a marine survey will be conducted, considering the current locations of fish farms, seawater flow, and the underwater topography. Subsequently, the spacing between fish farms will be readjusted, and a site suitability survey and on-site measurements will be carried out to address overcrowding. An optimal fish farm relocation plan will then be drawn up. This plan will be incorporated into the licensed aquaculture development plan for 2026-2027, and the locations of licensed fish farms will be gradually adjusted in stages.

Through the continued implementation of this project, it is expected to play a significant role not only in preventing marine pollution and the spread of diseases, but also in restoring productivity and establishing order in fish farms.

An official from Jeonnam Province stated, "This coastal fish farm relocation project is not simply a spatial readjustment, but a core strategy for the sustainability of eco-friendly aquaculture and the restoration of coastal fish farms."
