Busan City and BISTEP Secure National R&D Project for Compound Power Semiconductors

JM Jeco Selected as Final Implementing Agency for Advanced Power Semiconductor Technology Development Project
BISTEP Achieves Results Through Strategic R&D Planning and Support for Power Semiconductor Project Attraction

The power semiconductor industry, which is being strategically fostered by Busan Metropolitan City and the Busan Institute of Science and Technology for Education Promotion (BISTEP), has entered a phase of full-fledged growth after successfully attracting a national project.

On May 13, Busan Metropolitan City announced that local company JM Jeco was finally selected as the implementing agency for the 2025 new project of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's "Compound Power Semiconductor Advanced Technology Development Project (Commercialization Device·Module)."

This selection is the result of BISTEP's strategic planning and response to public calls, which have been promoted for local companies and research institutes since 2024. Since October 2023, BISTEP has acted as a practical R&D partner throughout the entire process of attracting this national project, including RFP analysis, consortium formation, business plan preparation, and presentation support, working closely with companies.

The selected project, with a total budget of 8.99 billion won, is titled "Development of Demand-Linked Technology for 250kW-Class EV Inverter Based on Localization of Double-Sided Heat Dissipation SiC Power Module." Its core goal is to develop a highly reliable SiC (silicon carbide) power module that can operate stably even in high-temperature and high-voltage environments.

The project will be led by JM Jeco, with participation from the Korea Electronics Technology Institute, the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, Pusan National University, Delta IS, and SL. It will be carried out over a total period of 45 months, from April 2025 to December 2028, with a total budget of 8.99 billion won (6.96 billion won in national funding and 2.03 billion won in private funding).

This technology is expected to be a core component for electric vehicles and next-generation power devices, and the transition to high-efficiency and high-reliability modules is anticipated to enhance competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.

BISTEP plans to use this achievement as a springboard to expand R&D planning and national project attraction not only in the power semiconductor sector but also across other promising future technology fields.

Kim Youngbu, President of BISTEP, stated, "This achievement is a representative example of how strengthening planning-oriented R&D capabilities in regional strategic industries can lead to tangible results." He added, "We will continue to be a practical R&D partner throughout the entire cycle, from planning to project attraction, and will systematically strengthen the discovery, planning, and public call response for promising projects so that Busan's technology-driven companies and research institutions can participate stably in national R&D projects."

BISTEP plans to foster a regional innovation ecosystem by providing tailored support and consulting to technology-driven companies based on analysis of Busan's strategic industries, including power semiconductors.
