Opening of Phase 1 of the Choansan Barrier-Free Forest Trail in Nowon

Nowon District in Seoul (District Mayor Oh Seungrok) announced the opening of the first phase of the Choansan Barrier-Free Forest Trail with a completion ceremony held on May 13.

The newly opened first phase of the Choansan Barrier-Free Forest Trail stretches for 1 kilometer, from Cheongbaek 1st Apartment Complex in Wolgye-dong to Wolgye Spark Golf Course. The district, with budget support from the Seoul Metropolitan Government, completed construction at the end of April. The barrier-free forest trail is a decked path with no steps and gentle slopes, designed to ensure that people with limited mobility can safely enjoy the forest. Rest areas equipped with pergolas, benches, and line markers have also been installed along the trail.

The district is also working to extend the second phase of the Choansan Barrier-Free Forest Trail by an additional 600 meters. This extension will connect the endpoint of the first phase to Wolgye Station on Subway Line 1, aiming to improve both usability and accessibility.

The completion ceremony was attended by more than 100 Wolgye-dong residents, along with city and district council members, including District Mayor Oh Seungrok. The attendees celebrated the opening by walking along the forest trail. Lee Hyekyung, a resident of Wolgye-dong who participated in the ceremony, commented, "I used to envy the well-developed decked trails on Bulamsan and Suraksan, so I am delighted to have a comfortable and beautiful path here now."

Currently, barrier-free forest trails (barrier-free deck roads) are available for public use on Suraksan, Bulamsan, and Yeongchuksan within the district. Each course features gentle decked paths with slopes of less than 8 percent, making them popular among people with disabilities, children, and the elderly.

A district official stated, "Barrier-free forest trails play a significant role in providing forest welfare for vulnerable groups, so we will expedite the extension of the second phase."

In addition to the barrier-free forest trail, Choansan continues to undergo improvements with various facility upgrades for residents. The Hydrangea Garden and picnic area, which opened last year, have become popular attractions this year with enhanced nighttime scenery. Hiking trails have also been upgraded earlier this year, with the replacement of outdated facilities and the installation of a restroom at the summit, improving convenience. Furthermore, an observatory is being planned within Choansan Neighborhood Park.

District Mayor Oh Seungrok stated, "In line with the changes in Wolgye-dong, such as the Gwangwoon University Station Area Development and reconstruction projects, Choansan, beloved by Wolgye-dong residents, is also undergoing a major transformation. We will do our utmost to ensure that residents can enjoy the natural forest resources more closely."
