Gwangju Donggu Council announced on the 13th that it recently held the '2025 Youth Mock Council Experience Class' for students of Seoseok Elementary School.
The Youth Mock Council, held on the 9th in the main assembly hall of the Donggu Council, was organized to help young people understand the roles and functions of local councils by conducting meetings themselves, and to allow them to experience democratic procedures and decision-making processes through mock council activities.
Thirty-six sixth-grade students from Seoseok Elementary School took on roles such as chairperson, council member, head of the administrative office, and expert committee member. They directly experienced the process of drafting mock ordinances, debating, and voting, making it a meaningful time to develop their capabilities as democratic citizens.
The students made three-minute free speeches on topics such as 'school violence' and 'observing rules.' In addition, the agenda item 'practical measures for safety around the school' was proposed, followed by a debate for and against, and then put to a vote.
Lee Rowoon, who served as the chairperson on the day, said, "It was fascinating to see community representatives gather to address local issues," and added, "I was happy and proud to be able to easily experience the local council, which I did not know much about before."
Moon Sunhwa, Chairperson of Donggu Council, said, "It was impressive to see young people actively participate in the policy proposal process and grow independently through discussion and negotiation. We will continue to develop programs in which children and youth can actively participate, and do our best to promote the rights of children and youth and to make Donggu a district where children are happy."
