An unusual "double egg," with one egg inside another, has been discovered in Goesan County, Chungbuk Province, drawing public attention.

On May 13, Yonhap News reported the story of Cho Kwanghyun, 66, who raises Cheonggye chickens in Chilseong-myeon, Goesan County, Chungbuk. According to the report, Cho was startled when he cracked open an egg and found another egg inside. The egg within the egg contained only egg white, with no yolk.

Cho commented, "I've often seen double-yolked eggs, but this is the first time I've encountered something like this. The egg was unusually large, so I thought it would be a double-yolked egg, but when I cracked it open, there was another shelled egg inside." The inner egg contained only egg white, with no yolk.

He returned to his hometown of Bido-ri, Chilseong-myeon, seven years ago and is currently raising eight Cheonggye chickens. The hen that laid the "egg within an egg" is a mother Cheonggye that hatched three years ago. Kim, who raises 20,000 laying hens in Cheongan-myeon, Goesan County, told the media, "It is extremely rare, but sometimes an egg is found inside another egg."

According to the Livestock Products Quality Assessment Service, eggs with a smaller egg inside are called "double eggs" or "nanjungnan" and are classified as deformed eggs. It is believed that this phenomenon occurs when a hen forms an egg but, before it is expelled from the body, forms another egg around it.

This is thought to be caused by abnormal secretion of hormones that control muscle contractions. It is known to occur more frequently in stressful situations or in older hens. Although it is not dangerous to eat, consumption is not recommended because it is a deformed egg.
