Namwon Mayor Choi KyungSik Makes All-Out Efforts to Secure Next Year's National Budget

Visit to the Ministry of Economy and Finance and Other Central Government Agencies

On May 13, Choi KyungSik, Mayor of Namwon City in North Jeolla Province, announced that he had visited the Ministry of Economy and Finance and other central government agencies to secure the national budget for the next year.

The city emphasized the urgent need for government budget allocations in order to stably pursue local priority projects, despite challenging local financial conditions. Namwon City plans to request the inclusion of both new and ongoing projects in the national budget.

During this schedule, Mayor Choi KyungSik visited relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Ministry of Environment. He explained the urgency and necessity of the city’s key projects and requested active cooperation from the government.

Previously, since February, the city has taken a proactive approach to securing national funding by conducting a series of business trips to central government agencies. From April 22 for three days, Namwon City held the "2026 National Budget Securing Response Briefing Session," where the city reviewed the status of budget requests for each project and identified key issues, making every effort to secure funding.

On this day, Mayor Choi visited the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and explained the necessity and justification for projects such as the Baekpyeong-Ipam District Comprehensive Flood Risk Management Project (73.2 billion KRW) and the Saengam District Natural Disaster Risk Improvement Project (11.5 billion KRW).

He then visited the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs to request national funding for projects such as the Banghyeon District Drainage Improvement Project (9.605 billion KRW) and the Construction of a Mass Raw Material Supply Center for Green Bio Materials (9.8 billion KRW).

At the Ministry of Environment, he explained the necessity of projects including the Biogas Utilization Loach Aquaculture Complex Energy Efficiency Project (1.5 billion KRW), the Creation of an Eco-Friendly Energy Town (18.1 billion KRW), the Installation of a Regional Solid Waste Incineration Facility (68.3 billion KRW), and the Daesan Landfill Recycling and Maintenance Project (23.3 billion KRW), and emphasized the feasibility and conditions for implementation.

Mayor Choi stated, "It is important to frequently visit central government agencies to explain the feasibility of major projects and to revise project plans based on the ministries’ feedback, so that they are reflected in each ministry’s budget proposal. Given the current presidential election period and the government’s focus on urgent projects, it is expected to be difficult to have our projects included in the budget. However, we will concentrate all administrative efforts and work closely with Jeonbuk Autonomous Province and National Assembly members to ensure that key projects are reflected in the budget."

Meanwhile, since September last year, the city has identified new projects for the 2026 national budget through a total of four briefing sessions. These projects will be included in each ministry’s budget and submitted to the Ministry of Economy and Finance by the end of May. After review by the Ministry of Economy and Finance (by September 3) and deliberation in the National Assembly, the final budget will be confirmed in December.
