Positive Response Nationwide... Participation in Gayageum Making and Performance
Goryeong County in North Gyeongsang Province launched the 'Gayageum Experience Program' on May 10 at the Gayatgo Training Center, aiming to widely promote the charm of the traditional instrument Gayageum and offer hands-on experiences.
This program runs every weekend (Saturday and Sunday) from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for four weeks, from May 10 to June 1. Notably, the Gayageum making session was led by Master Artisan Kim Donghwan, who is both a master craftsman of Goryeong County and a recipient of North Gyeongsang Province Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 42, showcasing the essence of traditional crafting techniques.
The Gayageum performance experience was guided by Park Bokyung, an instructor from the Goryeong County Gayageum Ensemble, who provided direct instruction to participants. Park was praised for captivating the participants with a high-level demonstration performance.
In particular, the first session, held over two days from May 10 to May 11, attracted a total of 18 participants in 10 teams from Daegu, South Gyeongsang, and other regions. The participants completed their own Gayageum instruments, concluding the experience, and received certificates while gaining a deeper appreciation for traditional culture.
County Governor Lee Namcheol said, "This program will serve as an opportunity to increase public interest in the Gayageum and expand the platform for experiencing traditional culture," adding, "We will continue to develop diverse programs to provide rich cultural content for visitors to Goryeong."
