In an effort to support children battling illness and their families, Gwangju Shinsegae donated 10 million KRW to the Gwangju Jeonnam Branch of the Korea Leukemia Pediatric Cancer Association in 2020. Subsequently, the company donated a total of 30 million KRW in 2022 and 2023.
Prior to this, last week, an event was held to deliver Hope Scholarships for local talent. On May 8, Gwangju Shinsegae held a Hope Scholarship delivery ceremony and provided 70 million KRW to the Gwangju Regional Office of the Green Umbrella Children’s Foundation.
The funds sponsored by Gwangju Shinsegae are used to support local youth who are striving for academic excellence despite challenging circumstances. The total cumulative amount donated by Gwangju Shinsegae under the Hope Scholarship program has reached 3.4 billion KRW.
On May 3, the awards ceremony for the 2025 Gwangju Student Art Competition, sponsored by Gwangju Shinsegae, was held. The Gwangju Student Art Competition, which began last year to provide opportunities for young local artists to showcase their talents, concluded successfully with enthusiastic participation from elementary, middle, and high school students.
Gwangju Shinsegae was established in 1995 as the first local corporation in the distribution industry, aiming to pursue mutual growth with the local community. In line with this mission, Gwangju Shinsegae has continuously carried out a variety of social contribution activities, including the Hope Santa Expedition, Hope Scholarship, S-BOX donations, and Kimchi-making volunteer work for charity.
In recognition of these efforts, Gwangju Shinsegae received an A grade for two consecutive years, 2024 and 2023, in the evaluation conducted by the Korea ESG Standards Institute.
Lee Donghun, CEO of Gwangju Shinsegae, stated, "We decided to donate sponsorship funds and blood donation certificates to bring hope to children suffering from leukemia and other illnesses," and added, "We sincerely hope that the families of these children can return to healthy daily lives as soon as possible."
