National Industrial Complex underground pipeline safety management, real-time integrated monitoring, and safety manager training
On May 13 at 3:00 p.m., the city of Ulsan will hold a completion ceremony for the 'Ulsan National Industrial Complex Integrated Safety Management Center' in Bugok-dong, Nam-gu.
The event will be attended by approximately 200 people, including Mayor Kim Dukyum, City Council Operations Committee Chair Gong Jinhyuk, and Na Seonghwa, Director of Industrial Supply Chain Policy at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The ceremony will proceed in the following order: progress report, commendations for distinguished contributors, commemorative address, ribbon-cutting, and facility tour.
The Integrated Safety Management Center is located in Bugok-dong, Nam-gu, with a site area of 6,000 square meters and a total floor area of 2,340 square meters. The facility consists of one basement floor and three above-ground floors, and is equipped with an integrated control room and laboratories.
The total project cost was 15.6 billion won. Construction began in October 2023 and was completed on this day.
The underground pipeline network in the Ulsan National Industrial Complex has become increasingly aged and congested over the past 60 years, since the area was designated as the Ulsan Special Industrial District in 1962. This has led to a growing risk of accidents such as explosions and fires, due to the development of major industries including petrochemicals, automobiles, and shipbuilding.
Additionally, because different laws apply depending on the type of material being transported, there has been an urgent need to establish a center capable of overseeing the comprehensive safety management of underground pipelines.
In response, in 2019, the city of Ulsan secured 600 million won in national funding for basic and detailed design. After signing a business agreement with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and Korea Industrial Complex Corporation, construction began in October 2023 and the center has now been completed.
With the establishment of the Integrated Safety Management Center, it is expected that safety management and real-time integrated monitoring of underground pipelines within the national industrial complex, as well as training for safety managers, will become possible, thereby greatly contributing to the safety management of the complex.
Mayor Kim Dukyum stated, "With the completion of the Ulsan National Industrial Complex Integrated Safety Management Center, we expect to build a much more intelligent and systematic industrial complex safety network by integrating digital infrastructure such as CCTV with advanced technologies based on artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT)."
