'2025 Youth Marine Olympiad' to Be Held... KIOST to Foster Future Marine Talent

Applications Accepted from May 1 to June 11

The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (President: Lee Heeseung), together with the Korea Maritime Foundation (Chairman: Moon Haenam) and Badaeui Pum (Chairman: Jung Taesoon), will host the '2025 Youth Marine Olympiad' to foster future marine talent.

Applications can be submitted through the Korea Maritime Foundation website from May 1 to June 11.

The 'Marine Olympiad' is a competition that tests creative problem-solving skills in all areas related to the ocean. It was held for the first time last year to give youth, who are the leaders of the future, an opportunity to recognize the importance of the sea and to deepen their knowledge.

This year's competition consists of a preliminary round, where participants submit an exploration proposal, and a final camp that lasts four days and three nights. For the preliminary round, participants are required to write an exploration proposal on a topic related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs) for the ocean, connecting it to one of five Korean-style marine literacy fields: marine science, marine territory, marine industry, marine culture, and marine career paths. Sixty participants will be selected to advance to the final camp.

The final camp will be held at KIOST and the Korea Maritime and Ocean University in Yeongdo-gu, Busan, from August 7 to 10, lasting four days and three nights. Finalists will prepare and present an exploration report on a common topic, which will be announced on the first day of the camp.

A total of 29 winners (individuals or teams) will be selected through evaluation, and they will receive certificates such as the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Award and the KIOST President's Award, as well as a total of 12.8 million won in prize money. In addition, major awardees will be given opportunities for overseas training.

Any middle school student or youth of middle school age can participate, and all participation fees from the preliminary round to the final camp are fully waived. Detailed information on how to participate and the list of awards can be found on the Korea Maritime Foundation website.

KIOST President Lee Heeseung stated, "It is more important than ever to nurture marine talent in the field of marine science and technology who will lead the future of our seas," adding, "I hope that through this competition, young people will develop an interest in marine science and be inspired to pursue their dreams as marine scientists."
