On May 12, Jeonnam Province announced that, in commemoration of the 45th anniversary of the 5·18 Democratization Movement, it would be operating 5·18 historical interpreters who directly convey the region's history of resistance at sites of the democratization movement.

Since 2022, Jeonnam Province has been providing specialized interpretation services to residents and tourists interested in the 5·18 Democratization Movement in Jeonnam, ensuring accurate understanding of the 5·18 history.

Although the 5·18 Democratization Movement began in Gwangju in May 1980, it spread to various regions of Jeonnam, and historic sites where people participated directly or indirectly are scattered throughout the area.

In 2020 and 2022, Jeonnam Province designated and renovated 29 locations with significant historical value as 'Jeonnam 5·18 Historic Sites,' and currently, 18 historical interpreters are active.

These interpreters are professionals who have completed both theoretical and practical training in historical interpretation and possess extensive experience in providing explanations.

At the Jeonnam 5·18 Historic Sites, they serve as educators, vividly conveying the events of the time to local residents, students, and tourists.

If a group of five or more applies, interpreter support is available. To receive this support, applications must be submitted to Jeonnam Province at least one week before the planned visit.

Of the eight courses operated by each city and county, up to two courses can be explained in a single day, and applicants and interpreters can freely coordinate the schedule, interpretation course, and order.

Detailed information on the interpretation courses by city and county can be found on the Jeonnam Province website, or inquiries can be made to the 5·18 Democratization and Past Affairs Support Center Team within the Department of Local Administration of Jeonnam Province.

Shim Jaemyung, Director of the Department of Local Administration of Jeonnam Province, said, "As we welcome May, I hope many people will take an interest in Jeonnam's 5·18 history of resistance and apply for the interpretation service."
