Yeongdeungpo District Launches Initiative to Improve Living Conditions for Households with Hoarding Disorder

Yeongdeungpo District (District Mayor Choi Hokwon) announced that it will implement the "Maeulan Hope Living" project to improve the living environment of households struggling with hoarding disorder.

"Hoarding disorder" refers to a condition in which individuals are unable to discard possessions to the extent that it interferes with daily life, resulting in the accumulation of items inside the home. This can lead not only to a decline in personal mental health, but also to various social issues such as fire hazards, disease, and conflicts with neighbors.

In response, the district will provide customized services that go beyond simple cleaning and tidying up, encompassing the alleviation of social isolation and prevention of recurrence. The district plans to actively identify households suspected of hoarding disorder in collaboration with the local community and establish an integrated support system covering everything from initial counseling to follow-up management.

The program is available to low-income households residing in Yeongdeungpo District with an income at or below 120% of the median income, with support of up to 5 million won per household. Practical living environment improvement services will be provided, including ▲waste disposal ▲professional cleaning ▲pest control ▲space reorganization.

This project is funded by the "2025 Hope Ondol Warm Winter Campaign" donations. Households suspected of hoarding disorder or those in need of assistance can contact their nearest community service center or the district welfare policy department.

Since 2022, the district has improved the living environment of a total of 29 households through the "Maeulan Hope Living" project. It has also continuously provided integrated case management for mental health care and restoration of interpersonal relationships, leading to positive changes.

District Mayor Choi Hokwon stated, "Hoarding disorder is not a personal issue that can be resolved with simple cleaning, but a matter that requires social attention and support," adding, "Through this project, we will actively support the improvement of living environments so that residents can continue to lead healthy lives together with their neighbors."
