From Cooling Shelters to Protecting the Vulnerable... Seongdong-gu Launches Comprehensive Summer Countermeasures

Seongdong-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jung Wono) will implement a "Comprehensive Summer Countermeasures" plan for five months starting on May 15, 2025, in order to prevent various disasters and safety accidents such as infectious diseases, heat waves, and floods, which are more likely to occur during the summer season.

This comprehensive plan focuses on strengthening disaster response systems in five key areas?heat waves, flood control, safety, public health, and convenience?through 26 major projects, with an emphasis on proactively blocking risk factors.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration’s forecast, there are expected to be more hot days than usual this summer. As such, the district will operate 202 cooling shelters, 167 shade canopies, 56 smart shelters, and 162 smart cooling and heating benches as heat mitigation facilities.

In particular, through the "Cool Roof Construction" support project, which provides heat-reflective paint for rooftops, the district aims to reduce residential heat, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and save energy. It will also conduct surveys of high-risk residences, including semi-basement homes, to provide customized support for each household.

Additionally, road water level gauges will be installed in the low-lying areas of Yongdap-dong and Seongsu-dong to monitor flooding in real time. In the event that river control is required due to heavy rain warnings, the district plans to operate early warning systems and conduct joint patrols with river patrol teams to guide residents to evacuate and prevent accidents.

To prevent food poisoning, which is more common in the summer, the district will strengthen preventive measures such as monthly inspections of group meal facilities and disinfection of 120 vulnerable areas, as well as expand disinfection equipment to better manage and prevent infectious diseases.

The district will also inspect all its offices and public facilities for compliance with major industrial accident prevention measures. Proactive safety inspections will be conducted at major construction sites, hazardous facilities, and steep slopes where safety accidents are likely to occur. In particular, the district will continue to focus on underground cavity inspections beneath roads?a project that has been carried out annually since 2022?to proactively prevent ground subsidence accidents.

Jung Wono, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, "In preparation for heavy rains and heat waves caused by abnormal weather, we will thoroughly inspect areas vulnerable to risk in advance and pay special attention to the vulnerable population, so that all residents can enjoy a safe and healthy summer."
