Voted for Lifting Martial Law and Opposed Candidate Replacement
Classified as a Reformist with Weak Factional Ties within the Party
Four-term Lawmaker Park Daechul Nominated as Secretary General
On May 11, Kim Moonsoo, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party, nominated Kim Yongtae, the youngest member of the party (born in 1990) and a lawmaker representing Pocheon and Gapyeong in Gyeonggi Province, as the successor to former Emergency Response Committee Chairman Kwon Youngse.
According to a source from Kim Moonsoo's camp, after attending the party's general meeting that day, Kim Moonsoo met with Floor Leader Kwon Seongdong to discuss the selection of the next Emergency Response Committee Chairman and decided to nominate Kim Yongtae for the position.
Kim Yongtae, a member of the People Power Party's Emergency Response Committee, has previously expressed public opposition when the party leadership attempted to replace its presidential candidate with former Prime Minister Han Ducksoo. In particular, on May 10, during the committee's decision-making process to cancel and re-conduct the presidential candidate selection, he was the only member to cast a dissenting vote.
Kim Yongtae is expected to officially assume the position of the new Emergency Response Committee Chairman after approval by the party's National Committee. Kim Moonsoo reportedly asked Kim Yongtae to "carry out political reforms regarding the areas where the public feels disappointed."
Kim Yongtae is the youngest lawmaker among the People Power Party members in the 22nd National Assembly. He first drew attention in 2021 when he was elected as the top youth member at the party convention. Subsequently, in the 22nd general election held in April last year, he ran in his hometown of Pocheon and Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province, and was elected.
He is currently regarded as a reformist within the People Power Party who is not strongly affiliated with any particular faction. Last year, he also participated in the parliamentary resolution calling for the lifting of martial law, demonstrating actions distinct from the party's mainstream.

In addition, on the same day, Kim Moonsoo nominated Park Daechul, a four-term lawmaker representing Jinju-gap, South Gyeongsang Province, as the Secretary General, who will oversee the party's organization and all practical matters related to the presidential election.
Previously, immediately after being elected as the presidential candidate on May 3, Kim Moonsoo appointed Jang Donghyuk, who had served as the head of the campaign headquarters, as Secretary General. However, Jang Donghyuk declined the position, so Lee Yangsoo continued to serve as Secretary General.
