Broadcaster Sangyong Lee, who was loved as a national MC while leading the popular military consolation program "Stage of Friendship," passed away on the 9th. He was 81 years old.
According to his agency, Emade Entertainment, Lee collapsed around 12:45 p.m. that day while returning from a hospital near his home in Seocho-gu, Seoul. He was transported to Seoul St. Mary's Hospital and received emergency treatment, but ultimately passed away. The cause of death was reported as cardiac arrest. The funeral is being held in Room 1 of the funeral hall at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital.
Born in Seocheon, South Chungcheong Province, Lee graduated from Daejeon High School and Korea University. He began his broadcasting career in 1971 as a host at CBS Christian Broadcasting. He gained public recognition through MBC's "Pleasant Match" in 1973, and later established himself as the representative MC of military consolation programs through KBS Radio's "Consolation Train" and MBC's "Stage of Friendship."
From 1989 to 1996, he hosted "Stage of Friendship" for eight years, leaving a deep impression with his catchphrase "To the hometown!" during reunions between soldiers and their families. His neat military uniform and short haircut earned him the nickname "Popeye Uncle," and he was loved by the public.
In addition, he was active in various other programs such as "Let's Gather and Sing," "National Singing Contest," and "Exciting Saturday." He received the Order of Civil Merit, Dongbaek Medal, in 1987, as well as a commendation from the Minister of Culture and Tourism. In 2009, he formed the "Popeye Traveling Troupe" with veteran artists and held free performances across the country.
