Governor Dongyeon Kim Hosts Parents' Day Event on May 9, Special Invitation for Sakhalin Compatriots

On May 9, Gyeonggi Province held a Parents' Day commemorative event, inviting Sakhalin compatriots who have returned to Korea for permanent residence and individuals recognized for filial piety.

Gyeonggi Province hosted the "53rd Parents' Day Commemorative Event" at Suwon Noblesse Wedding Convention on this day, providing an opportunity to express gratitude for the sacrifices and dedication of senior citizens.

This year, in particular, to mark the 80th anniversary of Liberation, the province added historical significance by specially inviting 18 elderly Sakhalin compatriots who were forcibly mobilized during the Japanese colonial period, left their homeland, longed for their country for a lifetime, and have now returned permanently to Korea.

Dongyeon Kim, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "When it comes to filial piety, it means becoming a person of integrity who does not bring disgrace upon oneself, refraining from words or actions that hurt others, and standing tall on your own feet while doing good for our society."

He continued, "I believe that true filial piety goes beyond simply treating your parents to a meal, giving them pocket money, or providing them with a comfortable life on certain days," and promised, "Although I may fall short, I will strive to put this mindset into practice myself."

Regarding the Sakhalin compatriots who have returned for permanent residence, he added, "This year, for the first time, Gyeonggi Province has begun providing region-specific services such as historical and cultural tours and healthcare services for Koreans returning permanently from Sakhalin. I am delighted and honored to meet you today, and I sincerely hope you stay healthy, live here for a long time, and find happiness."

At the event, 14 individuals recognized for filial piety and exemplary parenting, who have become role models by building outstanding families, received commendations from the Governor, the Chairperson of the Provincial Council, and the President of the Gyeonggi Province Senior Citizens' Association.

Meanwhile, approximately 1,630 Sakhalin compatriots who have returned for permanent residence are currently living in eight cities in Gyeonggi Province, including Ansan. This accounts for 54% of the total 5,130 such individuals nationwide.
